Pinbaall, 1973 is an "elusive" Murakami novel that only recently has become more widely available in English. It's structured around two, primary, characters much as later works such as Kafka on the Shore are. Of course, being an early Murakami effort it lacks the expansive nature we see in later novels. Regardless, one is drawn into the amazing complexity of the very narrow worlds of the primary characters in Pinball, 1973. Marukami demonstrates the same character foundation the world would discover with his future popularity. There is nothing different but it's interesting to read this early effort and witness Murakami's first, tentative, steps toward character construction. His subtle commentary on Japanese society makes a recognizable appearance too. This is highly recommended read which will convey to the Murakami fan his early stages as a writer. Moreover, you will have a greater appreciation of his continued progression in character study, style and societal criticisim in his later efforts. It's worth the price and time.

“Pinball, 1973” is the Murakami we know today. Having been written at almost the same time as “Wind,” it is a remarkable advance. The unnamed narrator is a translator who hangs out with his friend Rat at J’s bar and sleeps with twins. That’s what there is of a storyline, but as usual it’s the whimsical vignettes that define the novel. Here, the narrator starts by telling us how he interviewed people to hear their stories of faraway places. One of interviews was with someone from Saturn and another from Venus, and the narrator accepts this at face value. The twins insist they hold a funeral for a discarded switch panel, which they all agree is dying. We eventually hear the history of pinball machines and the model “Spaceship,” to which the narrator has become emotionally attached. Overall, this is a minor-but-promising work that defines existentialism.
This is a wonderful addition to our collection of Murakami. This book has been hard to find and I was very pleased that it was available at .
"Pinball, 1973" is a hard book to find within the US. Worth reading and slightly indicative of Murakami's famous style.
This is second in the Trilogy of the Rat, the first two of which have not been published in the West. This is a Japanese publication in English. It displays his brilliant handling of words. Just at the end there is the first (but very mild) display of Murakami's love of the fantastic. For anyone who liked "Wild Sheep Chase" it is essential reading.
"Pinball, 1973" is an easy text to get into, Murakami's style and flair are evident from the opening pages. If you are a reader who reads for plots, this book isn't for you- it is simply a beautiful piece of storytelling with the over all objective the rediscovery of a pin ball table. There are no major plot twists or turns, just a beautiful telling of a simple story- enjoy.
Having read Murakami for years now, I was skeptical at first of his very early work, which was a mistake. This book was as good, or better than, any of his other books. I especially liked the packaging small, pocket size, 175 small pages, original Japanese book packaging style, except translated into English. I carried it with me back & forth, until I finished it, then wished there was more.
While this was not a proper translation of the work (it is a translation for Japanese students learning English), it is still a must have for Murakami fans. It connections a portion of the Trilogy of the Rat, which enriches the understanding of one of his other major works (The Wild Sheep Chase).
