Poor woman. Stephenie Meyer makes it too easy for her detractors - or for those merely ambivalent to her prose - to take snipe shots at her. I guess thousands of swooning teens can't be wrong, except I feel they must be. I've a different notion of what a vampire should be like. To me, the undead thing should be more like the rough, hideous creatures from, say, 1922's silent horror classic, NOSFERATU, or Stephen King's SALEM'S LOT, or from Steve Niles' 30 DAYS OF NIGHT. In 1897 Bram Stoker injected a measure of gothic grace to the vampire lore, and Meyer took Stoker's romantic conceit and escalated it to a - for lack of a better description - chick lit extreme. It's gotten so I can't even bedazzle my motorcycle helmet any more without feeling guilty. Anyway, here's Andrew Foley and Fiona Staples' DONE TO DEATH to make me feel better about the sparkly state of vampirism in today's pop culture.

When you're a book editor beseiged with a neverending slush pile of submissions... When you're inundated with unsolicited manuscripts of which primary theme is the melancholy sparkly vampire... there's nothing for it but to hunt down these would-be writers and murder them.

And when you're an obese, stuttering loser in life and so you purposely seek to become a vampire so you could be cool and it happens, but then you're still an obese, stuttering loser but now your face is riddled with multiple fanged mouths and now you have to feed off the living... then you may take out your resentment against those who've misrepresented your kind as these glamourous, romantic creatures of the night.

What happens when both killers independently work their way up to their inevitable target, the phenominally best-selling author of vampire luridity, Stephenie Mey- er, Shelley DeMornay?

Andrew Foley may be best known for co-writing COWBOYS & ALIENS but he touts DONE TO DEATH as his favorite personal work thus far. There's quite a bit to pump up in this trade, which, by the way, collects the series's first five issues and features a Steve Niles intro. One issue extends a tongue-in-cheek disclaimer: "DONE TO DEATH contains scenes of coarse language, extreme violence, and other assorted naughtiness that the creators think is hilarious but may offend some audience members. Reader discretion is strongly advised." Maybe that gives you a sense of Foley's fine balancing act in these pages. DONE TO DEATH is both wicked black comedy and bloody horror story. It undermines the image of the romantic bloodsucker with so much gusto and does it so viciously that, somewhere, Max Schreck is cackling with sinister glee (we don't actually hear him laugh; his chortling is conveyed thru title cards).

Another bit of awesome is Fiona Staples' artwork. Alert to the triviaheads: DONE TO DEATH is Staples' first comic book, and it's fun to hold this up versus what she's currently doing in SAGA. You can see the evolution, the progression of technique. She isn't as commercially polished here. In DONE TO DEATH she exhibits a more free-flowing, more impressionistic style. There's a chaotic touch to her visuals that meshes so well with Foley's subversive storytelling. So how does Andrew Foley really feel about collaborating with Fiona Staples? Andrew Foley has been quoted to say: "I'd kill to work with her again. Brian K. Vaughan better watch his back." Even when just starting out, Fiona Staples was that good. Anyway, read DONE TO DEATH. Or else Edward Cullen will come to your house and be tragic in your face all day. You don't want that.

Done to Death Andrew Foley Fiona Staples 9781613770559 Books Reviews

Done to Death is creative and enjoyable even if about half of it is spoiled within the first few pages. Luckily, the spoilers don't make watching the train wreck that ensues any less fun due to the enjoyable plot twists and the surprisingly solid characterization. Everyone in the book feels like people you probably have seen on TV, in the news, or at a goth club somewhere and there are no cheesy cliches outside of the running gag of being based on a cliche.

Most the the jokes are variations on a single gag "Vampires are done to death"! If you have ever wanted to punch a "Woe is me, I'm beautiful and will live forever in grace and elegance. How tragic!" type of vampire right in the face, you are going to find tons of laughs in this one. Otherwise, the running gag may either bore or be lost on you.

Done to Death is very on the adult side. The book has humorous warnings about this all through it, but don't take them lightly as they weren't kidding. Nudity, sex, gore, violence, alcohol and even drug use is everywhere. I know this is a bit of a spoiler, but this book has also has a high body count and no "safe" characters.

The art is a bit scratchy, but is wonderful for conveying motion. When people are moving it feels fluid like seeing still frames of a movie. Sadly, this style also means slower motions can seem a bit stilted and shaky at times. The painted panels between books are lovely (as seen on the cover) and really help flesh out what the art in the panels had in mind. I wouldn't cut out and frame any of the pages, but they work well enough for telling a fairly visceral story without turning into pure gore and/or porn.

Honestly, despite the flaws, there's a lot to love here. The story is unique and spears a cliche without falling into cliche itself, the characters are well-written, the art illustrates the tale nicely, and the jokes are great (if you get them). If the first book had been less spoiler-filled it would have been amazing, but for now it's simply "very, very good".

I would highly recommend Done to Death for adult horror fans who are tired of romantic vampires or for any adult who's tired of badly written angsty goths. Angsty goths and people who love romantic vampires (like Anne Rice or Twilight) probably won't like it, though the book makes this point into a joke so take it as you will. Just don't say I (and the book) didn't warn you!
I love this story, and this collection is the way to go. I have the comics, but I like having compendium to lend out. This is a great print of a too short comic series.
