I purchased this with intent to give as a gift to granddaughter. I started to read it first and I am glad that I did. It is a story book with no pictures and the content is not for very young. They recommend 9 and up but I think that would be too young unless a child is advanced in reading. There are a few parts that would be considered racist in today's world. When the book was written, this was surely not the case. It is well written to make you feel like you are there in the scenery and the times. The chapters are each a story in themselves so it would be a good book to come and go in. It would make a good read aloud by chapter book to a child or grandchild. I'm a tender heart and SPOILER ALERT, the dog dies of old age in the end chapter, and it made me tear up. Most people can relate to having a beloved pet pass on in old age.Product details

One of the best of the dog books, a classic, well written and suitable for all ages. I was happy to get it used in good condition at a reasonable price.
...and knew my granddaughter would also love these books as she is a dog lover. Great for ages 10 to 14...but most adults would enjoy these books also. Not easy to find the whole series. I hope that has more of his published works available in the future.

A great book but I wish the print was larger!
The critics who said Lad was not a believable character has obviously never known a collie. Every bit of these dogs comes shining through in this breed today. So smart and beautiful, they can be underestimated for strength, bravery, and even a sense of humor.
Albert Payson Terhune remains one of my favorite authors, 20+ years after I originally read his books. His writing doesn't fail to transport the reader to his farm in New Jersey, and instills his love of dogs, especially the collie upon all who read and listen. Although his books may contain some slight violence, I have no hesitation reading his works to my three year old. His love for his dogs is easily understood, and his descriptions reflect the deep bond between dog and master. My daughter loves his works and looks forward to reading more of his stories each night. I would recommend this book to any reader, no matter their age.
