The strong sense of duty and devotion to family lives in every action, every thought Chris Offutt's protagonist shares with the reader. His descriptions of rural Kentucky, its times, and its people are so often touching that I felt compelled to read and re-read them again and again. I personally came to age in southern Georgia, and have written about that experience, so I know well some of the wonders he depicted about Kentucky--and I found Country Dark a remarkable way to recall them. Offutt's writing style in this novel so captured me that I immediately selected The Good Brother,one of his earlier stories, for my next read.

I grew up in rural Kentucky. Chris’s books are like a trip home for me. This one was totally not what I thought it would be. A great story. Definitely my new favorite writer.
This novel was written in a way that flowed along and kept me interested in getting back to this book. Everything in the story fit together in the end but the reader is kept guessing until the end. I look forward to reading more of this author's books!
Chris Offutt’s “Country Dark” is not a page-turner only because I wanted to remain on every page for as long as I could. In these days of binging TV shows and being bombarded by social media, “Country Dark” is an enjoyable slow read. When I finished Chris Offutt’s “Country Dark” there were tears in my eyes because I knew I’d never get the experience of reading it again for the first time.
Reading this book meant tumbling into it, landing clumsy in the dirt, and watching with my mouth open as the characters went about their business. I’m lucky if that happens once or twice in a novel. It came to be expected in Country Dark.

Offutt knows the hills; he knows his people. Country Dark is the work of a man writing about the fires of love and dignity and violence and how they swirl together in the blood, producing a conflagration of pride and anger that somehow leaves a crispness in the air, as if it’d just been blessed by a purifying rain.
This novel was quite good and readable. As a Kentuckian, I appreciate any time there’s a decent novel from Kentucky because not many novels are set there. However, there was something undefinable missing I think I wish there was a bit more depth and time spent with the characters during any one time period rather than hopping around.
A beautifully written love letter to the hill people of Kentucky through the eyes of one particular family in the middle of the last century. This novel sings, sometimes darkly, sometimes sweetly, always drawing you forward
Chris Offutt is the real deal; a writer from the backwoods of Kentucky that clearly knows his people and the way they live. And that is what makes this novel so interesting Offutt writes from the heart and his characters are plain spoken people that cherish family and a simpler way of life. There are no computers or Iphones cluttering up the plot; things happen for a reason and the results are outstanding. If you enjoy writing that is clear and pertinent, with authentic characters and real situations, then this is the book for you. Tucker is a man of his word and when he makes a promise, he certainly means to fulfill it and he does. Here is a real version of a hero that is probably very similar to how the author goes through this world. A wonderful novel to be savored and enjoyed!
